Applebees ain't nothin' special
As I mentioned in my last post I'm doing Weight Watchers. Nicole reminded me that Applebee's has a Weight Watchers friendly menu. Excellent, we usually eat out on the drive to my Mom's house and there was one less than 5 miles out of our way. So we stopped.

It wasn't the limited menu or the health choice quasi-forced on you (that is the point of Weight Watchers). No, it was the fact that I paid $9.49 for a 3oz steak, 1 cup of steamed broccoli, & 1/2 steamed potatoes (about 1/2 of a red potato). Where as I could've gotten a House Sirloin @ 9oz, 2 sides (broccoli and a baked potato minus the butter & sour cream) for $2 more. You're telling me that 6oz of meat only costs $2??!!??

I know people want a meal at about 7 pts (my meal) but I don't feel that it should cost as much as a whole freaking steak when they are only serving 1/3 of one! Oh yeah and apparently the cook didn't fraking understand MEDIUM-RARE mean that there should be some shade of pink involved, preferably red.

Since I now have 11+ points left I'm going to go see about some ice cream. Gnight.

Good luck for sure, WesO. WW worked wonders for my dad.

Yeah, I'm with you on that price thing. I did that exact same meal a few weeks ago when we went there for my nephew's b-day. I can't remember if they cooked it right or not (I get medium-rare), but I'm sure it wasn't, because it rarely is. I mean, don't get me wrong, considering I ended up having one of their new little tiny desert things, I was fine with the portions (I'd rather have a lot of different flavors than one big main thing), but the stingy in me was agitated by the fact that I could have got a TON more food for like, a buck more.

Eating healthy is hard, but when I can manage it, I find that I usually enjoy healthier alternatives. For example, if I have a choice between a candybar and a good-looking apple, I'd rather have the apple for my sweet-tooth, or even a bowl of some kind of kiddy cereal. Unfortunately the candybar is so much easier and it lasts longer. That's the big one in our house. I can't get my hubby to eat better, so I can't get much in the way of fresh food. Since I'm the only one eating it, it goes bad too fast.

I'm sure you've thought of this already, but if you can avoid soda, do it. I never realized how much pop I used to drink before I started dating my husband. Now I mostly drink ice-tea, super watered down or lots of ice. There is a lot of great un-sweetened tea here in Muskegon. Now I usually only have soda as a treat (Usually once a week during bowling season) and I find I enjoy it more and don't feel the need to drink it the rest of the time. Unfortunately I drink more soda during the summer when I am working, because I can drink it for free at work as long as I have my own cup, and there aren't a lot of alternatives. I try to do water while I am there, but I can't stand warm water and most bottled water tastes like plastic to me (The tapwater isn't real good there). I usually just fill my cup with ice and let it melt.

I love food. I love healthy food. I love greasy-spoon food.

I know what you mean about keeping fresh food fresh, even with a family of 4. Also the cost of fresh products is definitely an issue. Healthy food too. I would certainly eat more fish if it wasn't as costly, and I live less than 100 miles from the ocean.

I have found that drinks are somewhere I don't spend points. Water and tea mostly for me. I have given up pop on more than one occasion. Last spring, I realized that my problem with giving up pop was going to the bar. Pop is cheap at a bar, so to save money I would drink one drink and then switch to pop or just get freeby pop from Taki. Also if I was DD, there wasn't much to choose from other than pop, water and alcohol. Often I felt I needed the caffeine from the pop. Down here though I don't go to bars, so not nearly as much of a problem.

I know how hard it can be to turn down the free pop at work. I had a similar thing at the theater. I'm sorry its tough to get the mister to eat with you, I'm lucky in that my wife will pretty much eat whatever I put in front of her (although that means that she isn't any help in planning meals). When left alone she eats PB&J on white bread and cereal...oh and for a rare treat hotdogs.

Good luck with you're eating well

FYI
As I'm sure you've heard, we did the WW thing for a while too. It worked, but we fell off the wagon last summer after some family issues Now we are better emoitonally and working on the physical.

Applebee's regular menu sounds like it's the same in several places as the WW menu, but it's not. The steamed vegetables have butter on them and the steaks are prepared slightly different. There is a substantial point difference. So it's not the best food I've ever had, but having the option to go out and eat in a restaurant like normal people is nice when you are trying to create new patterns.
Good luck to you!

Actually yeah, I knew you guys had done it and had some success. I was one of the reasons I was open to trying it. So thanks for that.

I really like that they have option like the WW menu. But my complaints break down to 2 things: (1)I didn't feel like they did an adequate job of stating how the meal differed from their other meals. (2)The price is not inline with their other offerings, at least in my opinion.

Now that I have a better idea of what I am getting into, and have cooled off, would I go back? Yes, although I'm not 100% I would order the WW items. Part of what I like about WW is that you can eat whatever you want (as the slogan says) you just need to compensate in you're diet (eater a lighter lunch/breakfast or blow you're weekly extra pts) or reduce you're portion size (take 1/2 you're meal home with you). But I know you know this.
